[Financial News] The Democratic Party of Korea said the Supreme Court’s issuance of a detention warrant for Ms. Kim Keon Hee on the 27th was a common-sense decision. It also called for swift rulings on the various allegations surrounding her.
Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok held a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly on the 28th and said, “Extending Ms. Kim’s detention is entirely appropriate,” adding, “In light of public sentiment, common sense and the seriousness of the alleged crimes, extending her detention is justice served.”
He added, “We will make every effort to ensure that this kind of power-related corruption is thoroughly rooted out and those responsible are held to account, so that it never happens again.”
Democratic Party floor leader Han Byung-do said, “An additional detention warrant has been issued for Ms. Kim. Given the allegations of meddling in personnel appointments and receiving money and valuables, for which she was sentenced to five years in prison on appeal, this is a common-sense decision.”
Han said, “But the judiciary under Cho Hee-dae is still responsible for having delayed its decision; that responsibility does not disappear just because an additional detention warrant was issued for Ms. Kim.” He pointed out, “If the special counsel had not requested an additional warrant, Ms. Kim might have been released over the weekend.”
He also urged the Supreme Court to promptly set a date for an en banc ruling on the allegations against Ms. Kim, swiftly hear other allegations, including the buying and selling of public offices, and issue a strict ruling in accordance with the law and established principles.
He also said, “Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, who stood trial on charges of playing a key role in the insurrection, are also nearing the end of their detention periods next month,” and urged, “The Supreme Court should reach decisions in these cases to ease public anxiety and suspicion.”
