【Financial News, Andong-Gumi = Kim Jang-wook】Gyeongbuk Province is stepping up efforts to build testing, certification and demonstration infrastructure in Gumi for the secondary battery industry.
Gyeongbuk Province has built testing, certification and demonstration infrastructure for the secondary battery industry in Gumi. It has also completed the BaaS Testing and Demonstration Center and launched the Gyeongbuk hub of the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR).
This has established a hub for fostering the secondary battery industry in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region by connecting Pohang’s materials production base with Gumi’s testing and demonstration infrastructure.
According to the province, the launch ceremony for the KTR Gyeongbuk hub and the center’s completion ceremony were held on the 28th at the BaaS Testing and Demonstration Center in Gumi National Industrial Complex 1.
Yang Geum-hee, deputy governor for economic affairs, stressed, “The growth engines of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region are the core materials and components industries that determine the competitiveness of high-tech industries.” Yang added, “The central government, local governments and businesses will work as one team, and I will take responsibility for providing support through to the end so that these growth engines can run at full speed.”
Yang also said, “Gyeongbuk has protected the roots of South Korea’s manufacturing industry for more than half a century. Gyeongsangbuk-do will lead the way to ensure that industry takes root in the region and the fruits of growth spread throughout South Korea.”
The BaaS Testing and Demonstration Center, with a site area of 24,576 square meters and a total floor area of 3,232 square meters, comprises five buildings: a data center, a dismantling and storage building, a performance and safety building, a special vibration building, and a field verification building. It supports battery performance and safety assessments, verification of the reuse of used batteries, and on-site demonstrations. BaaS (Battery as a Service) is a battery service model in which users rent or subscribe to batteries rather than owning them. It improves usability through specialized battery management.
The KTR Gyeongbuk hub will bring together specialized personnel and equipment dispersed across Daegu and Gyeongbuk, with Gumi at its center. It will gradually expand testing and certification services needed by local businesses and support on-site demonstrations in coordination with the BaaS Testing and Demonstration Center. KTR plans to develop the Gyeongbuk hub into a comprehensive testing and certification hub supporting industries across Daegu and Gyeongbuk by 2028.
Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “With the completion of the BaaS Testing and Demonstration Center and the launch of the KTR Gyeongbuk hub, testing, certification and demonstration capabilities have been added to Gumi’s manufacturing base.” Kim added, “We will work closely with KTR and provide all necessary support so that this foundation can help businesses grow and strengthen the competitiveness of local industries.”
Meanwhile, the province also held a “Gumi Investor Luncheon Meeting” that day at the Gumi Convention Center. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy outlined investment support measures, including a “seven-policy support package” for companies investing in growth engine sectors. Participating companies presented the minister with difficulties encountered in implementing their investments and suggestions for improving the system.
