[Financial News] Foreign media reported on the 27th (local time) that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil’s presidential election, had headed to the United States without complying with the Supreme Court’s order to surrender his passport.
Senator Bolsonaro was reported to have left Brazil for the United States that day, but his specific destination, expected arrival time in the U.S., and whether he had applied for asylum were not confirmed.
The eldest son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, he was expected to win the election on the 25th but lost to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The following day, he received a Supreme Court order to surrender his passport within 24 hours in connection with a money-laundering probe, but reportedly failed to comply, resulting in the invalidation of his passport.
He denies the allegations.
A senior Brazilian Federal Police official said there was no record of him leaving the country through a regular immigration checkpoint.
As recently as the previous day, Senator Bolsonaro had said, “I have never even considered leaving the country,” and stated that he would surrender his passport and respond to the investigation.
Analysts say the trip to the United States could heighten tensions between Brazil and the U.S.
The Trump administration has claimed that former President Bolsonaro is facing judicial persecution, while President Lula has criticized the United States for supporting the Bolsonaro family’s return to power.
Former President Bolsonaro also left for the United States after losing the 2022 presidential election and later returned to Brazil; he was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges of plotting a coup.
