On the 28th, General Motors Korea said it had signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement with Inpyeong Automobile High School on the 26th at its showroom in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon.
Attendees at the signing ceremony included Hector Villarreal, president of General Motors Korea; Kim Byung-yoon, chairman of the Salvation Army's school foundation; and Ahn Gyu-baek, head of the GM Korea branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union. National Assembly member Noh Jong-myeon (Incheon Bupyeong-gap), Incheon Metropolitan City council members and other key officials were also present. The attendees signed the agreement and shared their vision for cooperation in automotive education linking businesses and schools.
Under the agreement, General Motors Korea will provide vehicles for educational and practical training so students can learn about the automotive industry and production sites. It will also run automotive-related lectures and production-site visit programs through its technical training center.
Separately, the parties are considering additional areas for cooperation, including lectures by field technicians, training centered on maintenance and on-site cases, information about courses at the technical training center, and support for practical exam venues. General Motors Korea said these initiatives are intended to help students explore career paths.
Villarreal described it as “a collaboration in which the local community, schools and businesses jointly provide students with educational opportunities,” and said the agreement marked “the starting point for nurturing future automotive talent.” He added, “We will continue our educational cooperation going forward.”
Kim Byung-yoon said, “I hope this agreement will serve as an opportunity to convey General Motors Korea's technology and on-the-ground experience to students, going beyond basic technical education,” adding, “I hope it will become an example of industry-academia cooperation in which labor and management and the school share their respective strengths.”
Ahn Gyu-baek also said, “Labor and management, which have worked to advance the automotive industry, are seeking to take on greater responsibility by considering the future of the local community and young people,” adding, “This agreement signing is the first step in putting that commitment into practice.”
