[Financial News] Solidigm, SK hynix’s U.S. grandchild company, is reportedly in talks with the U.S. Department of Commerce about a plan to invest $45 billion (about 60 trillion won) to build a NAND flash plant in the United States.
According to foreign media reports on the 27th (local time), Solidigm wants U.S. government approval to send equipment to upgrade its NAND plant in Dalian, China, before deciding whether to move forward with the project.
Solidigm explained to U.S. officials that increased sales from its Dalian plant would directly help fund construction of the U.S. plant.
Solidigm told the Department of Commerce that total investment related to the U.S. plant could approach $100 billion (about 133 trillion won) over time.
New York State and other locations were considered as potential sites, and construction could begin next year, one of the sources said.
According to Bloomberg, Solidigm declined to comment on its discussions with the U.S. government but said, "We are considering plans to build NAND memory fabs at several potential sites around the world, and no specific plans have been decided."
The talks came shortly after SK hynix disclosed on the 22nd that it was halting its consideration of an initial public offering (IPO) for Solidigm.
In August last year, the U.S. withdrew the equipment-import exemption (VEU) for the China plants of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix and replaced it with an annual approval system.
