[Financial News] On a rainy night, a grandmother in her 80s with dementia who had lost her way on Mudeungsan was safely rescued after a police search. The officers reportedly took turns carrying the exhausted woman on their backs down a steep mountainside with no hiking trail.
According to JTBC and KBS on the 27th, a 112 call was received at around 8:03 p.m. on the 25th from Ms. A, a woman in her 80s, reporting that she had lost her way in the mountains. At the time, she did not even know where she was.
Police who received the call went to the area around Mudeungsan based on GPS location data from Ms. A’s mobile phone. But it was raining, and the location indicated by the GPS had no hiking trail, making it difficult to reach. After searching their way through steep slopes overgrown with thorn bushes, officers found Ms. A at an elevation of 250 meters about 50 minutes after being dispatched.
When she was found, Ms. A had been exposed to the rain for a long time and was exhausted, making it difficult for her to move on her own.
The police asked the 119 emergency rescue team to wait at the point where they would descend. Then two officers took turns carrying Ms. A on their backs down the mountain trail for about 40 minutes.
Investigators found that Ms. A had dementia and had gone up the mountain alone before losing her way.
An official with the Gwangju Dongbu Police Station said, “If we had found her even a little later, she could have been in danger from hypothermia and other conditions,” adding, “We went out to search thinking of her as one of our own family, and we’re relieved we were able to rescue her safely.”
