U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 27th (local time) that he would officially ban the use of the term artificial intelligence (AI). He said he would call it superintelligence (SI) because the term AI carries negative connotations.
The announcement came a day after Anthropic devoted 92 of the more than 300 pages in its preliminary investment prospectus (SI) for what would be the largest initial public offering (IPO) ever to warning about the “risks” posed by AI.
On his social media platform Truth Social that day, President Trump claimed that the reason for banning the use of the term AI altogether was “because it is very bad and inaccurate.” He asked, “When will The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) call AI, a very bad and inaccurate term, SI?” and pointed out that the word AI carries a negative value judgment and that the term itself is inaccurate.
Trump, by contrast, claimed that SI is “a name virtually everyone is using or will soon use.”
He has argued that the word “artificial” in AI does not accurately reflect the level of technological advancement, and that SI, meaning exceptionally high intelligence, should be used instead.
Earlier, on the 29th of last month, he signed an executive order requiring federal departments and agencies to use SI instead of AI in official documents.
Trump is dismissing calls for global cooperation to control and check AI, which could soon escape human control and even wipe out humanity.
