[Financial News] A fire that started in District 2 of Guryong Village in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, is spreading toward the vicinity of District 7, carried by the wind. No casualties have been confirmed so far, but the fire is reportedly proving difficult to contain as the wind fuels its spread.
According to firefighters, police and the Gangnam District Office on the 27th, firefighters have established a perimeter and are doing their utmost to prevent the fire from spreading, but firefighting efforts are taking time because water supplies in the area are extremely limited.
Six helicopters are reportedly being used to fight the fire. Firefighters are using water cannons, but the fire continues to spread.
The affected areas appear to be expanding from Districts 1–3 to Districts 5 and 7.
According to the fire authorities, 39 people have evacuated on their own so far. No one is reportedly trapped.
Earlier, the fire authorities received the first report at about 3:51 p.m. that day and dispatched crews. At 3:59 p.m., they issued a Level 1 response.
The chief of Gangnam Fire Station arrived at the scene at 4:28 p.m. and assumed command. Firefighters are focusing on containing the blaze, positioning fire crews along the perimeters of each district.
The fire authorities have deployed 168 personnel and 51 pieces of equipment so far. The commissioner of the National Fire Agency ordered all-out efforts to prioritize firefighters’ safety in field operations, evacuate and rescue people, and prevent the fire from spreading.
Gangnam District Office is handling support for those displaced by the fire. Firefighters said that “nothing has been confirmed” about the cause of the fire or the possibility of arson.
Meanwhile, according to the Seoul Housing & Urban Development Corporation (SH Corporation), the number of households living in Guryong Village, once more than 1,000, has now fallen to 54 due to redevelopment.
