【Financial News Jeju=Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 The Jeju education office has agreed to work with a specialized education institution in Singapore to provide overseas culinary training for Jeju Mirae High School, which is set to open next March.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education on the 27th, the office signed an “MOU on International Vocational Education to Foster Global Culinary Talent” at At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy in Singapore on the 26th.
The agreement covers the Global Culinary Arts Department at Jeju Mirae High, which is scheduled to open in March 2027. The two institutions agreed to cooperate in three areas: culinary training tailored to students, curriculum development, and programs linking education with overseas workplaces. The education office plans to discuss the details of the programs based on the agreement.
At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy is a specialized vocational education institution in Singapore that offers courses in culinary arts, pastry and baking, and food and beverage. The Jeju education office is considering ways to connect the academy’s specialized training and workplace training system with the curriculum of Jeju Mirae High’s Global Culinary Arts Department.
The agreement is linked to changes in Jeju’s high school system. Jeju Mirae High is a new public specialized high school being built on land west of the existing Jeju High School. It will offer four departments: Global Culinary Arts, Smart Agriculture, Digital and Tourism Content, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Software. For the 2027 academic year, it will admit 20 new students to each department, for a total of 80.
As the existing Jeju High School and Jeju Girls’ Commercial High School transition to general high schools under the standardized admissions system starting in the 2027 academic year, Jeju Mirae High will provide vocational education linked to strategic local industries.
Since July last year, the Jeju education office has dispatched public officials to the Singapore Jeju Office of the Jeju Economic and Trade Promotion Agency to lay the groundwork for educational exchanges with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. In August, Superintendent of Education Ko Ui-suk visited an international exhibition in Singapore and discussed ways to broaden Jeju Mirae High students’ global career opportunities.
The agreement is significant because it makes these exchanges concrete by establishing an official partnership with a specialized education institution in the culinary field.
The education office plans to discuss how to run international culinary education programs for students in the Global Culinary Arts Department and to further tailor its existing overseas internship program for vocational high schools to students’ majors and job-specific needs. It will also consider expanding cooperation to other vocational high schools and fields of vocational education.
Applications for the special admissions track for Jeju Mirae High’s 2027 academic year will be accepted on November 24–25, and applications for the regular admissions track on December 1–2.
The Jeju education office plans to strengthen cooperation with specialized education institutions overseas and expand related education programs so that vocational high school students can experience culinary techniques and industry workplaces in various countries.
