[Financial News] Park Geun-ryeong, daughter of former President Park Chung-hee and former chair of the Yukyoung Foundation, criticized the film Assassin(s), saying that its portrayal of the shootings of her father and Yuk Young-soo contained details that differed from the facts.
At a memorial ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of former President Park Chung-hee’s death, held at Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, on the 26th, Park said she wanted to set the record straight about the shootings of former President Park Chung-hee and Yuk Young-soo after watching the film.
She went on to say that the film’s content should not be accepted at face value, saying, “I can’t let my father die twice as a villain,” and arguing, “People shouldn’t believe a film like that, made with its focus on something meaningless.”
Park also continued to make her case regarding the bullets fired during the 1974 shooting of Yuk Young-soo.
Claiming that seven shots were fired in all, Park said, “Moon Se-gwang fired six shots, and the one shot fired by a bodyguard toward Moon hit Miss Jang Bong-hwa.”
Regarding the bullet that struck Yuk Young-soo, she said, “One of the bullets Moon Se-gwang fired at former President Park Chung-hee hit Yuk Young-soo during the return fire directed at then presidential security chief Park Jong-gyu,” adding that “the various suspicions raised in the film are not true.”
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk, floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik, lawmaker Na Kyung-won and other party lawmakers attended the memorial ceremony.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon also attended, along with Kwon Oh-eul, the government’s Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
By contrast, Park Ji-man, eldest son of former President Park Chung-hee and chairman and CEO of EG, did not attend the memorial ceremony that day.
Former President Park Geun-hye also did not attend the ceremony on the 26th. Instead, a day earlier, on the 25th, she visited her father’s grave with Seoul National Cemetery Director Yoon Hyeon-ju and others, and attended a memorial service and a dinner in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, welcoming the visit to Gumi by nurses who had been dispatched to Germany.
