L&C BIO announced on the 27th that it had completed registration of U.S. Patent No. US 12,758,679 B2, covering a composition and manufacturing method for wound treatment that combines human skin ECM with biopolymers. After securing intellectual property rights for the related technology in South Korea and China in 2023, the company has now secured them in the United States as well.
The patent covers a technology that processes human skin ECM into microparticles and then combines it with biopolymers such as hyaluronic acid. A key feature is that it uses the tissue-derived properties of ECM while providing viscosity, cohesion and shape retention. The technology was designed to address the limitations of existing sheet-type wound dressings, which are difficult to apply to irregular wounds, and powdered ECM, which can be difficult to keep attached to a wound site.
The technology is associated with MegaCure, a gel-type wound dressing. MegaCure combines human-derived acellular dermis with cross-linked hyaluronic acid. It was developed to be applied directly to a wound to protect it and maintain a moist environment. The product has received approval in South Korea.
L&C BIO plans to use the patent to protect MegaCure’s core formulation technology and pursue overseas market entry and technology commercialization.
L&C BIO is developing both products that leverage the properties of human tissue itself and medical devices that adjust physical properties by combining polymers with tissue. In other words, it has adopted a two-pronged product development strategy: decellularizing human tissue to make use of its native ECM structure, and adding biopolymers such as hyaluronic acid to achieve properties including viscosity and shape retention.
The technology is expanding beyond the skin field into products such as MegaNerve for nerve reconstruction and MegaFill Putty for bone reconstruction. Lituo and MegaDerm, products based on skin ECM, are also among the company’s key product lines. The company is also pursuing the development of biomaterials that leverage the ECM properties of various tissues, including fat, tendons and ligaments.
A representative of L&C BIO said, “The significance of this U.S. patent registration is that it secures rights to technology that combines biopolymers with ECM derived from human tissue to achieve the physical properties required for products,” adding, “We will advance the related technology, strengthen the foundation for MegaCure’s overseas commercialization and continue expanding our human-tissue ECM platform.”
