Kim Byung-gi Appears for Police Questioning 50 Days After Arrest Warrant Request Was Returned

According to police and other sources on the 27th, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency plans to summon Kim on the 31st for questioning as a suspect.
On the 7th of last September, police sought an arrest warrant for Kim on suspicion of bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, obstruction of business, and other offenses.
However, on the 11th of the same month, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, saying the need for detention had not been sufficiently substantiated, did not request the warrant and asked police to conduct a supplementary investigation.
Police consequently called in as witnesses a former aide who had disclosed several allegations against Kim and, among others, a person who served as secretary-general of the Democratic Party of Korea's Dongjak Gap district committee in 2020. They further investigated possible destruction of evidence and allegations of nomination-related bribes.
Police also continued their supplementary investigation into the allegation that Kim received bribes from Jinwoo Sanjeon in the form of payments such as his second son's salary, questioning company officials as witnesses and seeking a warrant to trace his second son's accounts.
Since September last year, police have been investigating 13 allegations involving Kim, including alleged efforts to secure a university transfer and employment for his second son, receipt of nomination-related bribes, and misuse of his spouse's corporate credit card. Once questioning of Kim is completed on the 31st, the related investigation is expected to move toward completion based on the results of the supplementary investigations conducted so far.
