[Financial News]  The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) is holding disaster safety management training for heads of basic local governments in the ninth popularly elected term to prepare for winter disasters, including heavy snow, cold waves and major fires.
MOIS said it would hold the “2026 Disaster Safety Management Training for Heads of Local Governments” at the Daegu Marriott Hotel on the 27th. It is the third training session since the ninth popularly elected term began, following sessions held in July and September.
The training was organized to strengthen the disaster response capabilities of heads of basic local governments in the first year of their terms and to prepare for winter disasters. It focuses on improving the judgment and response capabilities of local government heads, who take charge at the scene in the initial stages of a disaster.
Kim Kwang-yong, head of MOIS’s Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters, will explain the national disaster management policy direction. Baek Jong-woo, vice chair of the National Life Safety Committee, will lecture on the duties and roles of local government heads in suicide prevention.
The training will also cover the climate crisis and cases of response to various disasters. Lee Jeong-hwan, a deputy administrator at the Korean Meteorological Administration, will explain measures to address the climate crisis, while Joo Yeong-guk, director of the National Fire Agency’s 119 Response Bureau, and Lee Yong-gwon, a forest disaster control officer at the Korea Forest Service, will share case studies on responding to major fires, wildfires and landslides.
Kim said, “The judgment and actions of local government heads, who are responsible for the scene on the front line in the early stages of a disaster, are the starting point for the nation’s disaster response.” He added, “I hope the disaster response systems and cases shared in this training will be widely used to prepare for winter disasters in each region and protect residents’ lives.”
