[Financial News]   The Democratic Party of Korea protested the appellate acquittal in the case involving allegations of proxy payment of polling costs for Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, criticizing the ruling and calling for judicial reform and legislative changes. At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea on the 26th, Supreme Council member Choi Min-hee said, “I strongly propose introducing AI judges to the public,” and added, “In particular, let’s introduce AI judges starting with political cases.”
Supreme Council member Choi criticized the ruling, asking, “A bus driver loses their job over an 800-won coffee mix, while Mayor Oh and the privileged can exchange tens of millions of won and still be acquitted?” She went on to ask what reason judges had to exist if they ruled with political motives instead of applying the law, and proposed abolishing the National Court Administration and introducing AI judges as judicial reform measures.
Supreme Council member Jeon Yong-gi also questioned the decision-making process in political trials and agreed with Choi’s proposal to introduce AI judges.

Floor Leader Han Byung-do challenged the legal validity of the appellate ruling. He said, “There are far too many aspects of this appellate acquittal that are difficult to understand,” and argued, “If things continue this way, third-party proxy payments will become a get-out-of-jail-free card for circumventing the Political Funds Act.”

He also urged the Supreme Court to rigorously review the assessment of evidence and application of legal principles and correct the appellate ruling. He further said legislative changes would be pursued to clarify responsibility for third-party proxy payments and strengthen the effectiveness of the Political Funds Act.
