[Financial News] Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on the 27th, “It is time to deliver concrete results to make nuclear power a reality,” and proposed tasks to expand nuclear power capacity.
Grossi said this in a welcome address at the “IAEA Nuclear Energy Ministerial Conference,” held that day at Songdo Convensia in Incheon, saying, “Support for nuclear energy from governments, financial institutions and end users around the world is growing.”
He said, “Power demand continues to rise because economic development, industrial cooling and the digital economy all require a stable electricity supply. Advanced nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, are attracting investment and continue to be developed.”
He continued, “More countries are asking how much nuclear power can contribute to strengthening energy security and accelerating electrification,” adding, “Political declarations alone cannot answer this question. Above all, successful programs
are built on a strong institutional foundation,” he stressed.
To this end, he mentioned effective regulation, a skilled workforce and reliable supply chains. He also emphasized thorough planning and international cooperation, explaining that “the IAEA’s Milestones Approach, safety standards, peer reviews, nuclear security guidance and safeguards verification framework
provide a foundation for expanding nuclear power,” he explained.
Grossi proposed measures to advance nuclear power effectively, saying, “I hope relevant organizations will be provided with the resources to implement nuclear programs and that operating capacity will be maintained through long-term operation,” and, “I hope you will work with financial and technical partners from an early stage and invest in workforce development and supply chains.”
