[Financial News] LG Energy Solution is stepping up its push into Europe’s energy storage system (ESS) market, following its expansion in North America. The company is partnering with a global renewable energy firm to pursue ESS supply deals totaling 2 GWh over the next two years, and is also considering expanding the scale of cooperation to 4.5 GWh over the medium to long term. With demand for ESS rising as AI data centers and renewable energy expand, the strategy is to secure new growth drivers by extending its customer base—currently centered on North America—to Europe.
LG Energy Solution said on the 27th that it had signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) with global renewable energy company Energix at its headquarters in Parc One, Yeouido, Seoul, to collaborate on ESS projects in Europe and North America.
Under the agreement, the two companies will pursue cooperation with the goal of supplying a total of 2 GWh of ESS over the next 24 months—about 1.5 GWh in Europe and about 0.5 GWh in North America. They will also discuss expanding total supply to around 4.5 GWh through local subsidiaries in Europe and the United States. However, the agreement is a non-binding MOU with no legal force, and the actual supply volume and schedule are expected to be finalized through further discussions.
Energix is a global independent power producer (IPP) specializing in renewable energy and headquartered in Israel. It develops and operates solar, wind and ESS projects, primarily in Europe, North America and Israel. The company is expanding its business with the aim of building a global project portfolio of at least 8 GW.
The two companies plan to make their cooperation more concrete, starting with the Jonava project that Energix is pursuing in Lithuania. The project is a hybrid renewable energy development that will include an ESS with a capacity of about 320 MWh. It is currently in the development stage, with commercial operation targeted for 2027.
This is not the first time the two companies have worked together. In 2024, LG Energy Solution supplied products for the Nowe Czarnowo ESS project in Poland, which Energix was developing, establishing a partnership between the companies.
The agreement is expected to help LG Energy Solution expand its ESS business base from North America into Europe. Demand for ESS has recently been growing in North America, driven by AI data centers, power grid stabilization and integration with renewable energy. LG Energy Solution is focusing on winning global ESS customers by leveraging its local production capabilities and battery technology.
Energix CEO Asa Levinger said, “This agreement will serve to strengthen our long-term partnership with LG Energy Solution. We look forward to exploring opportunities to build high-quality energy storage solutions across Energix’s project pipeline and accelerating the expansion of renewable energy in key markets.”
Kang Chang-beom, head of LG Energy Solution’s ESS Battery Business Division (executive vice president), said, “Our cooperation with Energix will enable us to expand ESS business opportunities in Europe and North America and further strengthen our global customer base. We will accelerate the growth of our global ESS business through our differentiated technology and local production capabilities.”
