[Financial News] Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are climbing sharply, recovering from the previous day’s weakness.
Overnight in the New York stock market, sentiment toward technology stocks improved on news that AI company Anthropic is pursuing an initial public offering (IPO). Buying also appears to be flowing into semiconductor stocks, a day before SK hynix reports its earnings.
At around 9:30 a.m. on the 27th, Samsung Electronics traded at 224,000 won, up 5.16% from the previous trading day, while SK hynix traded at 363,000 won, up 6.90%. Samsung Electronics preferred shares also rose 4.69%, with large-cap semiconductor stocks broadly rallying together.
Anthropic’s plans to pursue an IPO are cited as a reason for this rebound. The company is reportedly aiming to secure a valuation of up to $2 trillion (approximately 2,700 trillion won) and raise $100 billion (approximately 133 trillion won) through the listing. If the plan comes to fruition, it could be the largest IPO in the history of U.S. stock market listings.
Recently, market doubts have grown over whether AI companies can generate actual profits while shouldering massive investment costs. But assessments that the financials disclosed in Anthropic’s IPO filing are solid have revived expectations for the AI industry’s growth and its potential to generate profits.
The emphasis on the potential for AI companies’ growth to translate into actual revenue gains appears to have lifted sentiment toward technology stocks overall.
Han Ji-young, a researcher at KIWOOM Securities, said, “What stands out in Anthropic’s newly disclosed IPO filing is that revenue in the first half increased by about 1,300% and operating losses narrowed significantly.” She added, “This confirms once again that improvements in AI model performance and customer growth are translating into increased revenue from actual services.”
Overnight, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose 2.82%. With some concerns about the profitability of AI investments easing, buying appears to have spread to the semiconductor sector as well. In the South Korean stock market, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are also posting sharp gains, reversing the previous day’s losses.
Particular attention is focused on SK hynix, which is due to report earnings on the 28th. Alongside the results themselves, demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the outlook for memory prices and management’s forecasts for future earnings are seen as key factors that will determine the stock’s direction.
The key question is how well the actual results and future outlook will meet heightened market expectations.
However, it remains to be seen whether this rebound will lead to a trend reversal. Brokerage industry observers say that foreign investor flows and the stock’s performance after the earnings announcement will both need to be watched to determine whether this is a broad sector rally driven by improved sentiment toward AI investments or a technical rebound following the recent steep drop.
