[Financial News] Ahead of the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, President Donald Trump, who hit the campaign trail to support Republican candidates, drew criticism after publicly praising a specific body part of the famous female rapper Nicki Minaj, who was with him.
According to foreign media outlets including USA Today, Fox News and The Hill on the 25th (local time), President Trump said to Minaj, who was seated in the audience during a midterm campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, “I’ve seen a really beautiful butt, and that’s Nicki Minaj.”
Trump then urged her, “You can’t help but notice it. Stand up and let them see you.” When Minaj stood up and waved to the audience, his supporters broke into applause and cheers. Trump added, “I hope Nicki didn’t take that the wrong way,” and, “We love Nicki.”
The remark came as Trump recounted an anecdote about praising the sturdy build and buttocks of Republican U.S. Senator Jon Husted, a former football player. Trump said he had never looked at a man’s body that way, but that it was different with women, and then turned the conversation to Minaj.
Near the end of the rally, Minaj took the stage and delivered a roughly two-minute speech in support. She responded, “It’s an honor to be here, and I’ll support you forever,” adding, “If President Trump runs again, I’ll support him then, too.”
Minaj, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, criticized anti-immigration policies during Trump’s first administration, but has recently joined the MAGA camp (Make America Great Again) publicly and become a staunch right-wing supporter.
Minaj boarded Air Force One with President Trump that day. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung posted on social media a video he filmed with Minaj aboard the plane, along with a joking message: “Looks like we’ve found a new White House press secretary.”
Foreign media outlets analyzed the remarks as a trademark Trump campaign strategy: rejecting “political correctness” (PC) and using his unfiltered rhetoric to rally his supporters. Publicly commenting on a specific part of a woman’s body at an official political event can typically lead to major political fallout. But Trump is seen as actively using his trademark provocative remarks as a crowd-pleasing element that livens up the atmosphere at his rallies.
However, with the midterm elections just around the corner and close races continuing in battleground states, concerns have also been raised that the remarks—criticized as inappropriate sexual comments for a public official—could hurt his standing with moderate voters.
