Samsung Electronics said it signed an agreement with Tencent and Woori Bank at Tencent’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, on the 26th to support overseas payments with Samsung Wallet Money and strengthen cooperation.
The signing ceremony was attended by Chae Won-cheol, vice president and head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung Electronics’ MX Division; Daniel Hong, vice president of Tencent’s Financial Technology Division; and Woori Bank President Jin-owan Jung, among others.
Samsung Wallet users can pay with Samsung Wallet Money at WeChat Pay merchants throughout China. They can bring up a payment QR code in the Samsung Wallet app and show it to a store employee, or scan a QR code displayed at the store.
QR codes are widely used in China for restaurant table ordering and payment, as well as everyday small-value transactions. Samsung Electronics said users can make local payments with Samsung Wallet Money without preparing or registering a separate payment method.
No fees are charged for overseas payments. For offline payments, 0.3% of the amount is credited as Samsung Wallet points, with no cap. Samsung Wallet Money is a service that users top up through the Samsung Wallet app and use to pay, and it offers points on purchases.
The three companies plan to expand payment methods for QR transactions in China to include credit cards in the first quarter of next year. They also agreed to strengthen their medium- and long-term partnership in digital payments.
Samsung Electronics also plans to launch NFC-based contactless payments overseas, including in China, allowing users to pay by tapping their smartphones on payment terminals.
Vice President Chae said, "Building on our partnership with Tencent and Woori Bank, we have expanded overseas the convenience of Samsung Wallet Money, which has been proven in Korea," adding, "We will continue to work closely with global partners to provide payment experiences tailored to local markets."
