[Financial News] On the 27th, People Power Party floor leader Chung Jeom-sik urged Special Inspector Choi Gil-soo to investigate as his first case the “emperor golf controversy involving Mrs. Kim Hye-kyung,” raised by Joo Jin-woo, a lawmaker from his party. Earlier, Joo alleged that Mrs. Kim had received an “emperor lesson” at Taereung Country Club accompanied by a famous professional golfer. However, Lydia Ko, who was identified as the professional golfer, said, “I have absolutely nothing to do with this.”
At a meeting on measures for the parliamentary audit at the National Assembly that day, Chung said, “The crux of the issue is that it was the president’s family, not the president, that privately used the Taereung Country Club golf course, a military facility,” and “The Blue House need only explain whether Mrs. Kim played golf or not.”
Earlier, on the 26th, Joo raised the allegation, saying, “On October 20, Mrs. Kim played golf at Taereung Country Club accompanied by a professional golfer.” He claimed that three people played golf that day and that the “emperor clubhouse” reserved for the president was also opened. Joo said, “The private use of military facilities by Lee Jae-myung’s family is a crime,” and asked, “An on-course lesson with a world-class professional golfer costs tens of millions of won. Who paid for it?”
In response, Chung said, “The Blue House threatened the media, saying that reporting on Joo’s claims by quoting them constituted the spread of false information. This is media control and press directives of the kind one would expect in a dictatorship,” and “Seo Young-kyo, chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for the Democratic Party of Korea, also blocked Joo when he tried to play the video.”
Addressing Special Inspector Choi, who was appointed after a gap of about 10 years, Chung stressed, “Yesterday (the 26th), Special Inspector Choi reported to work for the first time and said on the way in that they would uphold political neutrality and independence in carrying out their duties to the end. Choi must prove that resolve,” and “I urge Choi to make it his first task to leave no suspicion about the emperor golf controversy involving Mrs. Kim unresolved.”
