Good Neighbors said on the 27th that it had shared with the bereaved family the results of the “Late Kim Soo-mi Scholarship Support Project,” which was funded through memorial donations to mark the second anniversary of her death.
Last October, the bereaved family donated to Good Neighbors the royalty proceeds from “I Appeal to All That Kills Me,” a collection of the late Kim’s diaries written during her lifetime. The donation was made to carry on her wishes to care for neighbors in need and children.
The book, which brings together diaries and column manuscripts written from 1983 to 2024, was published in December 2024. It contains not only reflections on the challenges of being an actor but also accounts of family and everyday life.
Over the past year, Good Neighbors used the donations to provide tailored support in education, living expenses and career development to four children from families in crisis in Korea. Taking each child’s circumstances and needs into account, it helped them continue their studies.
A child facing medical expenses and caregiving burdens due to an illness in the family was able to prepare for further studies with the support. Another child, who dreams of becoming a swimmer, received funding for training and swimming equipment, continued training and won a bronze medal at a local competition.
One child who received support wrote in a letter, “The scholarship gave me the courage and hope to get through a difficult time and move forward,” and added, “In the future, I want to share the help I received with others.”
Last year, the late Kim was listed as a member of Good Neighbors’ special group for legacy donors, The Neighbors Legacy Club, following a memorial donation. The group continues its giving through legacy and memorial donations, among other forms.
Jeon Mi-seon, secretary-general of Good Neighbors, said, “I will do my utmost to ensure that memorial donations go beyond remembering the deceased and provide practical help to neighbors in need.”
