[Financial News] South Korea’s economy has posted strong growth for three consecutive quarters so far this year, amid a record boom in semiconductor exports.
On the 27th, the Bank of Korea announced that real GDP grew 1.0% quarter on quarter and 3.4% year on year in Q3 2026. The figure is more than three times the BOK’s forecast of 0.3% growth for Q3, released in August.
Quarter on quarter, real GDP rebounded from -0.1% in Q4 last year to 1.8% in Q1 this year, then continued its strong growth after rising 0.6% in Q2.
Year on year, real GDP growth was 3.8% in Q1 and 3.7% in Q2. It edged down slightly this quarter, but remained in the 3% range. Real GDP growth for the year is therefore forecast to reach the mid-3% range.
However, the recovery in private consumption slowed from the previous quarter, and the benefits of economic growth are not being felt evenly across ordinary households.
By expenditure category, investment supported overall growth.
Facility investment rose a robust 4.1% quarter on quarter, led by machinery such as equipment used to manufacture semiconductors (up 9.4% year on year).
Government consumption increased 1.9% from the previous quarter as spending on goods and health insurance benefits rose.
Construction investment also increased 0.7%, led by civil engineering construction.
Investment in intellectual property products also rose 2.3%, led by research and development (R&D) and software.
Private consumption, by contrast, fell 0.2% quarter on quarter (up 1.1% year on year) as both goods, including passenger cars and household appliances, and services, such as financial and food services, declined.
Exports rose 2.3%, led by semiconductors, machinery and electrical equipment. Imports increased 2.4% as imports of crude oil and machinery used to manufacture semiconductors grew. Year on year, exports and imports rose 8.6% and 7.0%, respectively.
Net exports (exports minus imports) added 0.1 percentage point to Q3 growth. Overall domestic demand, including consumption and investment, contributed 0.9 percentage point to the increase.
By component, private consumption contributed -0.2 percentage point and government consumption 0.3 percentage point, while construction and facility investment contributed 0.1 and 0.4 percentage point, respectively.
A breakdown by economic activity shows growth across all industries.
Manufacturing grew 2.0% quarter on quarter on strong performance in computers, electronic and optical equipment, and machinery and equipment. Construction rose 2.0% as civil engineering construction increased.
The electricity, gas and water supply sector expanded 3.7%, led by the electricity industry.
Agriculture, forestry and fishing surged 5.9%, led by crop farming and fishing. Services edged up 0.2%, led by business services, information and communications, and transportation.
Improved terms of trade for semiconductor exports, among other factors, helped real gross domestic income (GDI) surge 3.4% quarter on quarter and 18.8% year on year, far outpacing GDP growth. This was the highest reading in 48 years and nine months, since Q4 1977 (19.0%).
