MCST Moves to Integrate Gugak Broadcasting and the Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Foundation

[Financial News] The integration of Gugak Broadcasting and the Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Foundation is being pursued.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 27th, the integration of the two organizations is being pursued under the Public Institution Function Reform Plan announced on September 3. The aim is to improve the efficiency of policy implementation by linking the broadcasting and distribution of Korean traditional music content with support for the creation of traditional performing arts.
Gugak Broadcasting has been responsible for distributing and popularizing Korean traditional music content through broadcasting, while the Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Foundation has handled support for the creation and production of traditional performing arts, as well as workforce development.
MCST plans to support the promotion of Korean traditional music and traditional arts by combining Gugak Broadcasting’s capabilities in using media for publicity and wider outreach with the foundation’s creative and production capabilities.
MCST plans to form a task force (TF) with the two organizations, develop a phased implementation plan, and proceed with follow-up steps, including amendments to the law.
Gugak Broadcasting is a statutory corporation whose establishment is provided for under the Gugak Promotion Act, which took effect in July 2024. Article 17 of the act sets out the establishment and scope of business of Gugak Broadcasting, as well as the basis for government funding, among other things.
MCST plans to continue providing support so that the integrated organization can play a central role in promoting Korean traditional music and traditional arts in line with needs on the ground.
