According to ChildFund Korea on the 26th, the campaign “Is It Okay to Deliver It Like This?” uses parcel delivery as a metaphor to convey the message that adequate safety standards must be in place before AI technology is made available to children.
The campaign introduces how children and adolescents use AI not only to seek information but also to form emotional bonds through conversation. It also highlights threats to their rights and safety, including excessive immersion and overdependence, as well as exposure to inaccurate or dangerous information.
The campaign proposes six standards to consider in the development, provision and operation of AI: the best interests of the child, safety, transparency, privacy protection, fairness and child participation. It has also set up an online signature page for members of the public who support creating a safe environment for AI use.
This campaign is part of ChildFund Korea’s “Online Safety” initiative. In March this year, ChildFund Korea surveyed 3,300 children and adolescents nationwide about their use of generative AI, and on the 12th proclaimed a “Child Rights-Based AI Charter” comprising six chapters and 20 articles.
Meanwhile, the Personal Information Protection Commission released guidance titled “Generative AI and Privacy” for children and adolescents in May this year. It outlined items to check when using AI, including what information to enter, the reliability of its responses and how to protect data.
ChildFund Korea plans to expand collaboration with domestic and international organizations, businesses and members of the public, and continue working to improve relevant laws, systems and public awareness.
Hwang Young-ki, chair of ChildFund Korea, said, “As technology advances rapidly, we must also establish standards that enable children to use AI safely and have their rights respected in the process.”
