[Financial News] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said working-level discussions in a trilateral format involving the United States could be held as early as next month to end the war between his country and Russia.
In an interview with Ukraine’s 1+1 television channel reported on the 25th (local time), Zelenskyy said of the possibility of holding trilateral talks, “Territorial issues should be handled at the leaders’ level, while other matters can be addressed by working-level technical groups,” adding, “All of this could be discussed in November.”
He added, “We are ready to take part in trilateral talks among working groups, and these talks must produce concrete results.”
Zelenskyy also said that during his visit to Oslo, Norway, last week, a U.S. delegation he met asked him, “What exactly do you want?” He said he responded with a counterquestion: “Then, could we end the war at the working-group talks in November?”
Zelenskyy said, “Of course, the war cannot be completely ended without the leaders taking part,” but explained that he had called for a ceasefire in the energy sector, securing maritime shipping routes, resolving the grain issue, exchanging all prisoners of war, and holding a summit.
Regarding the White House’s recent proposal for a localized ceasefire in Oleshky, in southern Ukraine, starting on the 27th, he said, “This shouldn’t be something that ends after just one day; it should last for several days.”
After Zelenskyy’s interview was reported, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on the 26th (local time) that even if trilateral talks involving the United States were held to end the war in Ukraine, they would not place any restrictions on Russian military operations.
According to TASS Russian News Agency, Peskov said at a briefing, “The decision to resume trilateral talks does not mean any restrictions on military operations.”
He added, “Our military is continuing its ‘special military operation’ and carrying out large-scale attacks on military facilities and paramilitary targets in Ukraine,” and stressed that “the Kyiv regime continues all its acts of provocation.”
Peskov also commented on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement that territorial negotiations should take place at the trilateral talks, saying, “It is undesirable to discuss such details publicly, as that could harm the peace process.”
