Ewha Womans University will expand its basic and interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence (AI), supported by 25 billion won over five years. Centered on the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, the university plans to advance AI theory and technology development and increase joint research with overseas research institutions.
Ewha Womans University said on the 26th that it held the “G-LAMP Project Team Launch Ceremony and Commemorative Symposium” on the 16th at LG Convention Hall in the university’s International Education Building.
G-LAMP is a program supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) to support basic research institutes at universities. Ewha Womans University was selected last year for the program in the engineering field and will receive 25 billion won over five years.
The research is being carried out by the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, which opened in July last year. About 120 people, including professors, postdoctoral researchers and early-career researchers, are participating in three areas: mathematics- and statistics-based AI theory research, the development of next-generation AI technologies with ultra-high reliability, and the implementation of human-centered, interdisciplinary AI systems.
The project team plans to expand its research facilities and equipment and strengthen cooperation with research institutions in Korea and abroad. It will also improve its support system so early-career researchers can focus on their research.
About 120 people, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, the National Research Foundation of Korea and G-LAMP project teams at universities across Korea, attended the launch ceremony. Project team director Lee Jun-yeop and Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Research Institute director Min Dong-bo presented the team’s plans for operations and research.
At the symposium that followed, Lee Jun-seok, a Seoul National University professor and director of the Mobile Tactical Cannon program’s Defense AI Research Institute, and Noh Jun-hyeok, a professor at Ewha Womans University, gave lectures.
Ewha Womans University President Lee Hyang-suk said, “At the heart of the AI research Ewha aspires to pursue is always the ‘human.’ We will continue to take on challenges through the G-LAMP project team and the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, and grow into a global AI research hub where we ask questions and seek answers together with researchers around the world.”
