【Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop】 Novelist Lee Sun-won, who has broadened the connection between literature and local culture while leading Kim Yu-jeong Literature Village, will take part in running the Gangwon Art & Culture Foundation as its sixth chair.
According to Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province on the 26th, the province presented Lee with a letter appointing him the foundation’s sixth chair at the Trade Consultation Room in the provincial government office that day. As a non-executive board member, the incoming chair will help determine the foundation’s key policies and operational direction through the board, while handling communication with the cultural and arts community and external cooperation to help advance the foundation.
Born in 1958, Lee graduated from Gangneung Jeil High School and the Department of Business Administration at Kangwon National University. After making his literary debut through a New Year’s literary contest in 1985, he has continued to publish works for more than 40 years. From 2020 to 2022, he served as head of Kim Yu-jeong Literature Village, promoting the value of local literary resources and pursuing various activities that connected literature with local culture.
The province expects Lee to bring together a broad range of voices from the arts community, drawing on his long creative career and understanding of the cultural and arts scene. It hopes this will help the Gangwon Art & Culture Foundation establish itself more firmly as a specialized cultural and arts institution connecting artists with residents.
Gangwon Governor Woo Sang-ho said, “It is reassuring to have someone who knows the local cultural and arts community so well, thanks to many years of creative work and on-the-ground experience.” He added, “I hope the foundation will become an even stronger specialized institution that narrows the distance between residents and artists by listening to the diverse voices of the arts community.”
Foundation Chair Lee Sun-won said, “All the stories I have written as a writer have been drawn from Gangwon, and this land is still full of new stories.” He added, “I will communicate sincerely with the board and the cultural and arts community, and contribute to the foundation so that Gangwon’s culture and arts can flourish.”
