On the 26th, Mirae Asset Life Insurance announced on its website that personal credit information had been leaked in a cyber intrusion incident. On the 25th, it detected abnormal activity in some systems and became aware of the cyber intrusion.
Early that morning, it conducted a detailed analysis of the incident with an external specialist agency and confirmed that personal information had been leaked. So far, it has only established that the information was accessed.
The incident was reported to all three: the Financial Supervisory Service, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC).
This is the first time a hacking-related information leak has been reported at an insurance company. Previously, customer information leaks were confirmed at Shinhan Financial Group, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana, Busan Bank, Yegaram Savings Bank, Welcome Savings Bank, and Hyundai Capital Services, among others. Reports of cyber intrusions were also received from Saemaul Geumgo and OK Savings Bank.
A Mirae Asset Life Insurance representative explained, “We are still determining who was affected by the information leak and what information was exposed, and have activated our emergency response system,” adding, “We have strengthened security measures, including blocking the attack IP and protecting customer information.”
Mirae Asset Life Insurance’s website is currently inaccessible. This is a measure to prevent further information leaks affecting users. A company representative noted, “There are concerns about secondary harm, such as identity theft on websites, smishing, and phishing using the leaked personal information.”
