[Financial News] After online rumors spread that former President Yoon Suk Yeol was at risk of losing his sight, his legal team said the claims were untrue. While his eye health is indeed poor, he has been receiving regular treatment and is now in relatively stable condition, the team said.
On the 25th, attorney Yu Jeong-hwa, the public relations officer for the former president’s legal team, said in a Facebook post, “It is true that former President Yoon’s eye health is poor, but he has received regular treatment since the period last year when his symptoms were severe, and his condition is now relatively stable.”
The team also denied allegations that the Seoul Detention Center was forcibly reducing former President Yoon’s medication dosage or restricting his medical care. It said claims that officials at the detention center in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi Province, were preventing him from receiving treatment were untrue, and that rumors he was refusing to meet with his lawyers had no basis.
According to Yu, former President Yoon meets with his lawyers even on days when he has no trial, receives updates on the progress of his case, and discusses how to respond going forward. Yu said, “I ask that unverified rumors not spread unnecessary misunderstandings and concerns.”
Recently, posts claiming that former President Yoon could lose his sight have spread on social media, including Threads, particularly among his supporters. The legal team is understood to have explained his health condition directly in response.
Yu said former President Yoon’s weight loss may be behind the rumors expressing concern about his health. “He probably lost so much weight that everyone became concerned,” Yu said, adding, “I’ll make sure he can eat better.”
Concerns about former President Yoon’s eye health were also raised last year. After he was rearrested on July 10, 2025, he requested bail on health grounds. At a bail hearing in August that year, attorney Gye-ri Kim argued, “He is at risk of blindness due to retinopathy caused by severe diabetes and needs ongoing ophthalmological treatment.”
At the time, however, the Ministry of Justice countered that “the claim that former President Yoon is at risk of going blind is untrue.” It said it had allowed him to receive outside medical care twice for his eye condition and had provided all necessary medical measures within the scope of care available to inmates.
