Han Byung-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, “There are far too many aspects of this appellate acquittal in the case involving allegations that polling expenses were paid on Mayor Oh’s behalf that are difficult to accept,” and pointed out, “If things go on like this, third-party payments will become a free pass to circumvent the Political Funds Act.”
Han said, “I hope the Supreme Court of Korea will rigorously review the assessment of evidence and the application of legal principles, and correct the errors in the appellate court’s ruling,” adding, “We will pursue legislative amendments to clarify accountability for third-party payments and strengthen the effectiveness of the Political Funds Act.”
Democratic Party of Korea Supreme Council member Choi Min-hee called for the introduction of AI judges. Choi said, “I strongly propose introducing AI judges to the public,” and urged, “Let’s introduce AI judges first in political cases in particular.”
Criticism of Supreme Court of Korea Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, head of the judiciary, continued as well. Supreme Council member Lee Sung-yoon called for impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Cho to begin immediately, along with urgent reforms such as reforming the National Court Administration and expanding the Korean Jury Trial system.
Democratic Party of Korea chief spokesperson Park Seong-jun told reporters after the Supreme Council meeting that day, “Alongside a comprehensive review of political intervention by the judiciary, we are preparing a response,” adding, “A parliamentary investigation into Chief Justice Cho and his impeachment, as well as a special counsel bill to investigate fabricated prosecutions, are being reviewed and prepared at the National Assembly.”
