According to Ulsan Fire Headquarters, a report was received at around 11:53 a.m. that day that gas believed to be sulfuric acid had leaked from the oil-storage vessel Secheongho (a barge), moored at the pier in front of Jangsaengpo Culture Warehouse in Jangsaengpo-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan.
The 119 rescue team responded after four people working nearby reported symptoms including throat irritation. Three of them were taken to hospital, and a temporary emergency treatment station was set up in case more people were affected.
At around 12:48 p.m., seven more people became patients and were immediately transported to hospitals separately.
The accident occurred when a storage tank aboard the vessel containing 300 liters of sulfuric acid for vessel cleaning was damaged. After the fire authorities sealed off the leak and completed safety measures, the situation was brought to an end at around 2:15 p.m.
No further sulfuric acid gas is being detected at the scene. The fire authorities, together with police and other relevant agencies, including the Joint Chemical Disaster Prevention Center, are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident and the amount leaked.
