[Financial News] Hwang Gyu-bin, chairman of Jellain, who spearheaded the first Nasdaq listing by a Korean company in Silicon Valley, and Kim Tae-gyun, president of Korea Electric Power Engineering, who contributed to achieving technological self-reliance in the national power grid, received prestigious awards from their alma mater.
Hanyang University’s College of Engineering announced on the 26th that it had selected Chairman Hwang Gyu-bin and President Kim Tae-gyun as recipients of the 15th Proud Hanyang Engineering Alumni Award and held an awards ceremony. The ceremony was held on the 23rd at the Seoul Campus in Seongdong District, Seoul. The award is presented to alumni who have contributed to the development of national industries and embodied their alma mater’s founding philosophy of “putting love into practice.”
Award recipient Hwang Gyu-bin is a Korean entrepreneur based in the United States who worked as a researcher at Ford Motor Company before founding the computer technology company TeleVideo in Silicon Valley. His company became the first Korean-owned firm to successfully list on the U.S. Nasdaq, showcasing the capabilities of Korean engineers to the world. He later served in roles including technical adviser to the U.S. president on advanced technology, acting as a bridge for industrial and technological exchange between Korea and the United States.
Co-recipient Kim Tae-gyun is a power technology expert who earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Hanyang University. He led domestic power-grid research and development in roles including head of the Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Power Research Institute and head of its Technology Innovation Division. As president of Korea Electric Power Engineering, he is now working to achieve technological self-reliance and strengthen the competitiveness of the national energy industry.
Ahead of the awards ceremony, an unveiling ceremony was also held for bas-reliefs honoring the achievements of the two recipients at the Hall of Fame in the main building of Hanyang University’s Engineering Center.
An official from Hanyang University’s College of Engineering said, “Both recipients have demonstrated their alma mater’s spirit of challenge and practical approach to learning on the world stage and in the nation’s key industries,” adding, “We hope the paths they have taken will serve as valuable guideposts for future engineering students.”
