According to logistics industry sources on the 26th, CJ Logistics has developed a “next-generation DAS (Digital Assorting System)” to reduce waiting times and unnecessary processes at its logistics centers. DAS uses digital indicators to tell workers where to sort each product and in what quantity.
The system’s key feature is its ability to reduce bottlenecks in the goods-sorting process. Under the previous DAS, workers sorted goods sequentially along predetermined routes. When a particular client’s outbound volume surged, workers had to wait for the preceding task to finish, and goods also had to be presorted according to work routes.
The next-generation DAS changes this workflow. Indicators installed on each worker’s tablet and mobile cart show the product type, sorting location and quantity. Because workers can sort independently, they are less affected by the pace of other workers.
The presorting process can also be skipped. Previously, goods had to be separated according to work routes, but with the new system, workers can check the sorting location and quantity for each item even when different types of goods are loaded together on one cart. Since sorting can begin right away without presorting the goods, the system is expected to reduce the total number of work steps.
The system also includes features to improve sorting accuracy. When a worker scans a product’s barcode, its information and loading location appear on the tablet and cart indicators. A mobile label printer can be used to print labels on site, allowing goods inspection and sorting to take place at the same time. This is expected to reduce the distance workers travel and lower the risk of mis-sorting.
CJ Logistics expects the next-generation DAS to increase goods-sorting productivity by about 14%. It believes the gains from reducing work-route distances and waiting times will be greater at logistics centers handling a wider variety of goods.
The system is significant because it raises productivity not only by expanding logistics automation equipment but also by improving existing work methods themselves. At logistics centers that handle a wide range of goods and receive different order quantities from each client, waiting times and the number of steps involved in sorting can affect operational efficiency.
A CJ Logistics official said, “The next-generation DAS is a system that improves work methods to reduce unnecessary tasks and make goods sorting easy and accurate,” and added, “We will continue to provide stable and competitive logistics services through frontline-focused technology development and innovation in our operating processes.”
