[Financial News] Bitcoin fell below $80,000 as global oil prices surged amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to CoinMarketCap, a global crypto data platform, Bitcoin was trading around $79,000 as of 10:40 a.m. on the 26th, down 1.06% from the previous day (over a 24-hour period). Bitcoin had been trading above $80,000 since around the 19th of last month, but has been on a downward trend, falling to around $79,000 starting the previous day.
Bitcoin was trading around 106 million won on Upbit, a domestic crypto exchange. According to Cryprice, a global crypto market comparison platform, Bitcoin’s kimchi premium was recorded at 1.07%.
The decline appears to be driven by rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. According to foreign media reports, the United States is withdrawing personnel from across the Middle East based on information that Iran is preparing an attack targeting Americans. U.S. President Donald Trump also said in an interview with local media on the 25th (local time), “We have to decide whether to bring things with Iran to a head or reach an agreement.”
Global oil prices also remain high. On the 23rd (local time), Brent crude rose 3.8% during trading on the 23rd to $117.45 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 3.8% to $103.27 a barrel. Brent crude was at its highest level since last April, while WTI was at its highest in about a month.
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index provided by CoinMarketCap stood at 43 that day, indicating “neutral.” The index ranges from 0 to 100: readings closer to 0 indicate “extreme fear,” while those closer to 100 indicate “extreme greed.”
At the same time, Ethereum was trading around $2,317, down 1.55% from the previous day. Ripple was trading around $1.29, down 0.61%.
