[Financial News] Police have launched an investigation into the head of a delivery agency suspected of disappearing without paying the hundreds of millions of won in delivery fees owed to riders.
On the 26th, according to police and other sources, Seoul Eunpyeong Police Station received a complaint on the 16th accusing A, the head of a delivery partner company, of embezzlement and other offenses, and is investigating the case.
A is suspected of embezzling delivery fees owed to riders while operating a Coupang Eats delivery partner company in and around Mapo-gu and Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul.
About 40 delivery riders filed complaints against A, and police interviewed the complainants as victims on the 20th.
The victims' side claims that about 250 delivery riders are affiliated with the three partner companies operated by A, and that each rider has not received 2 million to 3 million won in delivery fees, bringing total losses to hundreds of millions of won.
Police, however, believe that the actual amount of losses reported so far may be lower than that.
A reportedly explained that delays in repaying money borrowed to expand the business had disrupted the settlement of delivery fees, then changed their contact details.
Police are checking the exact circumstances of the case, including whether additional reports of losses have been filed.
