【Financial News, Chuncheon—Kim Gi-seop】Gangwon State’s Future Talent Development Program, which has nurtured Olympic weightlifting gold medalist Jang Mi-ran and pianist Yeol Eum Son, has identified 10 new next-generation talents in science and technology, culture and the arts, and sports from among 117 applicants.
The Gangwon Talent Institute said on the 26th that it finalized the selection of 10 Gangwon State Future Talents for 2027 on the 23rd. A total of 117 people applied during the application period from September 1 to 21, making for 11.7 applicants per spot. The final list was decided after review by a selection committee made up of experts in each field on the 22nd.
In science and technology, students Kim Seong-yun (first-year physics student at Seoul National University), Won Jae-in (third year at Gangwon Science High School), and Choi Won-jeong (first year at Gangwon Science High School) were selected. In culture and the arts, the selected students were Lee Jae-hyeok (first year at Seoul Arts High School), Jin Su-yeong (first-year vocal music student at Seoul National University), and Han Jae-yun (second-year instrumental music student at Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts)).
Sports had the most selections, with four students. Park Si-hyeon (third year at Gangwon Sports Middle School), Woo Da-yeon (second year at Gangwon Sports Middle School), Jang Mun-seong (third year at Gangwon Sports High School), and Jeong Ji-won (first year at Seomgang Middle School) were chosen as future talents. The selections spanned middle school through university, bringing together talented students at different stages of their development.
The selected students will receive certificates this November. Scholarships will be paid starting next year, with middle and high school students receiving 3 million won a year and university students receiving 5 million won a year for up to seven years. This means a student currently in the first year of middle school can continue receiving the scholarship after entering university.
Since its launch in 2005, the Gangwon Future Talent Development Program has produced 257 outstanding talents. In addition to Jang Mi-ran and Yeol Eum Son, cellist Jaemin Han, Cho Min Gyu of the crossover vocal group Forestella, and architect Shin Jeong-yeop have gone through the program and made names for themselves in their respective fields.
