According to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, with 99.76% of the votes counted, President Lula had 51.76% of the vote, securing his victory over Bolsonaro, who received just 48.24%.
Since first taking office in 2003, President Lula has now won the presidency for the fourth time, setting a historic record as the first four-term president in Brazil’s modern political history. Since first running for president in 1989, he has made seven presidential bids in total, with a record of four wins and three losses (elected four times and defeated three times).

The ‘blue tide’—a wave of right-wing governments—sweeping Latin America since U.S. President Donald Trump took office has also been checked. No right-wing candidate had lost a presidential election in Latin America since the start of Trump’s second term, but the left has now won for the first time in Brazil, the region’s largest country.
