[Financial News] Starting at the end of this month, regular motorcycle inspections can be booked and paid for through the Kakao T and Kakao Navi apps.
According to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) on the 26th, TS will open its regular motorcycle inspection booking service to Kakao T and Kakao Navi at the end of this month. Until now, motorcycle owners could book regular inspections only through the TS Cyber Inspection Center. Going forward, they will be able to complete the entire process, from booking to payment, in mobility apps they regularly use. TS says that with more inspection booking channels available, it will be much easier for owners to complete inspections within the designated period.
The measure is linked to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s “Digital Service Opening” initiative. The initiative connects services previously available only on public agencies’ websites or dedicated apps, making them accessible through private-sector apps as well. Vehicle inspection booking first became available in June 2023. At the time, the ministry launched vehicle inspection booking as one of its first services to be opened up, along with SRT ticket reservations, National Arboretum reservations and the Incheon International Airport map service. Information on inspection periods and booking at nearby inspection stations was made available through NAVER, NAVER Map, Kakao T, Toss, KB Star Banking and Shinhan MyCar, among others. Kakao T, which is now accepting motorcycle inspection bookings, was one of the apps that participated at the time.
Regular motorcycle inspections check whether motorcycles meet safety standards and comply with emissions standards, among other things. Owners of motorcycles subject to inspection must have them inspected within the designated period; those who miss the deadline are subject to an administrative penalty. Previously, regular inspections applied only to large motorcycles with engine displacements exceeding 260 cc. The scope was expanded when an amendment to the Clean Air Conservation Act took effect in February 2021. Medium- and small-size motorcycles with engine displacements of 50–260 cc, manufactured and registered for use on or after January 1, 2018, also became subject to inspection. Under standards announced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government at the time, the first inspection is due three years after a new registration, with inspections required every two years thereafter. For up to 30 days past the deadline, the penalty is 20,000 won; after that, it increases by 10,000 won every three days, up to a maximum of 200,000 won.
TS Chairman Yong-Sik Jung said, “We expect this opening to make it more convenient for motorcycle owners to book inspections through apps they regularly use,” and added, “We will continue to expand our cooperation with private platforms and steadily improve any inconveniences the public may encounter while using the booking service.”
