Some cities and counties in Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City (Gwangju Metropolitan City) are offering train-fare discount coupons and digital Onnuri Gift Certificates to ease the financial burden on travelers visiting Jeonnam-Gwangju by train for Fall Travel Month.
The initiative aims to boost the local economy by attracting more tourists. First, travelers visiting areas with declining populations will receive discount coupons equivalent to the train fare. Eligible travelers are those who visit any of nine counties—Gangjin, Goheung, Gokseong, Gurye, Boseong, Jangseong, Jangheung, Hampyeong and Haenam—using an independent travel package.
Oh Mi-gyeong, head of the Tourism Policy Division at Gwangju Metropolitan City, emphasized, “We expect the rail discounts during Travel Month to help showcase Jeonnam-Gwangju’s charms and bring vitality to areas with declining populations.”
To receive a discount coupon, travelers must book the relevant product on the Korail website or mobile app, travel by train, and then verify their visit at a designated tourist attraction using a KorailTalk QR code or a Digital Tourism Resident Card. The coupon will be issued within 10 days of using the product and can be applied to a subsequent train-ticket booking; it is not a cash refund.
In addition, the first 2,000 people to verify visits to any of 13 designated areas nationwide—including the six Jeonnam-Gwangju counties of Haenam, Hampyeong, Jangseong, Boseong, Gangjin and Jangheung—will receive a digital Onnuri Gift Certificate worth 20,000 won per person. The certificates are scheduled to be distributed in a single batch at the end of December.
These benefits are available through November 26. Details for each product can be found on the Korail website and mobile app, as well as on the Korea Tourism Organization’s Travel Month website.
Director Oh said, “I hope you can ease the burden of train travel this fall and fully enjoy Jeonnam-Gwangju’s diverse charms.”
