[Financial News] Chung Jeom-sik, floor leader of the People Power Party, said on the 26th, regarding the Democratic Party of Korea’s consideration of pursuing a parliamentary investigation before introducing a motion to impeach Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae: “Since impeachment is a habit for that party, it should file an impeachment motion immediately rather than resort to a trick like a parliamentary investigation,” adding, “If the motion is rejected, the party leadership can take responsibility by resigning en masse and facing the judgment of the people.”
Chung said at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day: “The DPK said it would pursue a parliamentary investigation into impeaching Chief Justice Cho and impeachment over the withdrawal of the indictment shortly after the parliamentary audit.” He added, “Even as national crises pile up—including security concerns, cracks in the ROK-US Alliance, soaring property prices and a sharp plunge in the KOSPI—the Lee Jae Myung administration is concerned only with canceling the president’s trial and erasing his crimes.”
He went on to criticize: “The parliamentary investigation into Chief Justice Cho is a political attempt to test the waters. In front of its hard-line supporters, the party postures as if it will impeach him immediately, but when it comes to actually trying, it fears the fallout.” He added, “The parliamentary investigation is the only trick it has managed to come up with after wavering amid the impeachment dilemma.”
Regarding the special counsel bill on fabricated indictments being pursued by the ruling bloc, he said, “If the president was wrongly indicted, he can explain himself in court.” He added, “Why reject the trial process that every citizen goes through and seek withdrawal of the indictment through a special counsel just for himself? Because he cannot obtain an acquittal or dismissal of the indictment through a trial.”
Chung said, “(President Lee) will lose the ability to push for withdrawal of the indictment after facing the judgment of voters in the general election, and if he proceeds with it just before the election, he will face even harsher judgment.” He added, “So he would want to complete the withdrawal of the indictment in advance, before the general election draws near.”
Asked about the presidential office’s consideration of lawmakers Park Gyun-taek and Yang Bu-nam as candidates for minister of justice, he said, “Should a bodyguard for the president’s legal troubles be appointed even as minister of justice?” He noted that “Park defended President Lee in the Baekhyeon-dong, Seongnam Football Club and North Korea remittance cases, while Yang served as head of the legal support team for Lee Jae Myung’s campaign during the 2022 presidential election, overseeing the party’s response to Lee’s legal risks.”
He also stressed, “Every administration in history has had factions, but a faction made up of people who once served as the president’s lawyers is unprecedented since the founding of the nation.” He added, “No matter what tricks the president and the DPK use to try to break out of prison, they cannot escape the massive prison bars of the people’s judgment. Anyone who tried to erase crimes through the power of office will ultimately face the people’s judgment and stand alone before the court’s stern judgment.”
