[Financial News] A video of a foreign woman disappointed at not finding halal food in a South Korean convenience store is drawing attention online.
A video showing a foreign woman visiting a South Korean convenience store and looking for halal food spread on social media on the 22nd.
The video shows the woman scanning products displayed in the convenience store with a mobile phone app to check whether they are halal. Halal means permitted under Sharia, Islamic law. For food to be recognized as halal, it must meet certain standards, including requirements for how animals are slaughtered under Islamic law.
The woman looked at various products, including cup noodles, snacks and drinks, but the app repeatedly classified them as “haram.” Haram means forbidden; alcoholic beverages and pork that does not meet halal standards, among other things, are considered haram foods.
Each time all the products she had selected were classified as haram, the woman looked displeased. When she ultimately could not find any halal food, she made a gesture as if puzzled and left the convenience store looking dissatisfied.
The video spread across social media and online communities, drawing attention from internet users. They responded, “If you want to find halal food in South Korea, go to a specialty store,” “Koreans don’t get annoyed when they go to convenience stores in the Middle East and find no kimchi, so why come to South Korea and act like this?” and “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
Some internet users also criticized the woman, saying that her failure to strictly follow religious customs, such as not wearing a hijab and having piercings, revealed a double standard.
