[Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk criticized the second-trial acquittal of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon on the 26th in a case involving allegations that Myeong Tae-gyun’s polling costs were paid on his behalf, saying, “The special counsel acted as the administration’s indictment vending machine and was dealt a heavy blow by the court.” Commenting on reports that the Blue House was considering Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers Park Gyun-taek and Yang Bu-nam as candidates for the next minister of justice, he said, “They are trying to turn the Ministry of Justice and the Public Prosecution Office into a law firm for withdrawing President Lee Jae Myung’s indictments.”
At a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council at the National Assembly that day, Jang said, “Not only Mayor Oh but also those involved in the case received full acquittals.” He added, “This is what a fabricated prosecution means. The special counsel must apologize to the public and immediately give up its appeal to the Supreme Court of Korea.”
Jang said, “When the court made it unmistakably clear that the judiciary is alive, President Lee and the Democratic Party were thoroughly frightened.” He added, “They are hastily considering lawmakers Park Gyun-taek and Yang Bu-nam, members of Gongchimo—the group seeking to have indictments in the president’s cases withdrawn and to promote a parliamentary investigation—as candidates for minister of justice.”
He continued, “The Democratic Party says it will pursue the impeachment of the chief justice of the Supreme Court. They know that if President Lee’s trial resumes, he could soon be brought down, so their aim is to block it by suspending the chief justice from his duties.” He added, “The public senses the end of this administration. Whether they install a Gongchimo minister or impeach the chief justice, in the court of public opinion the Lee Jae Myung administration has already been sentenced to ouster.”
Jang said, “The people’s demand is the resumption of President Lee’s trial.” He emphasized, “Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, trust the people and make a decision. If the judiciary finds the courage, the people will protect it.”
Jang also signaled plans to cut the 2027 super-budget, which totals 820 trillion won. He said, “BOK Governor Hyun Song Shin said, ‘If something lasting is created using temporary fiscal resources, it will be difficult to reverse.’ When President Lee was governor of Gyeonggi Province, he indiscriminately expanded welfare and scattered money just because tax revenues had risen a little. As a result, the country’s finances have collapsed to the point that they can’t even cover the cost of meals for children.”
He continued, “Even so, the government unveiled a super-budget totaling 820 trillion won and created a 162 trillion won Future Response Fund as well.” He predicted that it was “a plan to start handing out cash in the second half of next year ahead of the general election.”
He said, “What was the result of injecting 26 trillion won in supplementary budget spending ahead of the local elections? People received only a pittance in livelihood support payments, while prices soared severalfold.” He added, “With prices skyrocketing, people’s wallets shrank further, loan interest costs rose, and life became harder for ordinary people.”
Jang added, “President Lee is borrowing against the country’s future to protect his approval rating. The money being handed out by this administration is money that tomorrow’s young people will have to repay.” He continued, “The day young people’s anger explodes will be the last day of this administration. The People Power Party will weed out every handout in the budget and come up with real alternatives to revive the economy and improve people’s livelihoods.”
