[Financial News] General Motors (GM) is using artificial intelligence (AI) to turn cars from simple means of transportation into lifestyle platforms. It is introducing OnStar AI, which lets drivers control vehicle functions by voice and get information about their journeys, and will integrate related mobile services next year. The company aims to gain an early lead in the future mobility market by combining the technology with autonomous driving so vehicles can handle everyday tasks such as shopping and taking family members places.
GM said on the 26th that it had announced plans to introduce OnStar AI, an AI-powered connectivity service, and a new mobile app at the ‘GM Forward’ event held in New York on the 21st (local time).
OnStar AI is an AI assistant that controls vehicle functions using natural-language voice commands. Drivers can use voice commands to adjust the cabin temperature or check how far they can drive to their destination. It also provides optimal route guidance, including stops for charging electric vehicles.
It also explains vehicle-specific features, from the meanings of dashboard warning lights to one-pedal driving and lane-keeping assist. A key feature is personalized guidance based on the vehicle’s condition, the driver’s situation and GM’s vehicle-related information. The customer’s privacy settings apply, and users can connect with an OnStar advisor if they need additional help.
GM plans to debut OnStar AI in the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV via an over-the-air (OTA) software update in the coming months, then expand it to other models.
Next year, GM will launch a unified OnStar mobile app to replace the existing OnStar Guardian app and the individual apps for the Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick brands. Users will be able to check their vehicle’s status and get the information they need through AI, even when they are away from the vehicle.
The new app will include a ‘Connected Camera’ feature that records video when the vehicle’s camera detects certain situations and sends an alert to the user. ‘OnStar Family’ will let family members share destinations and coordinate pickup schedules, as well as manage multiple vehicles together. Customers can set permissions for the use of data such as camera, microphone and location information.
GM will also enhance vehicle management features for corporate customers. ‘OnStar Fleet Intelligence’ brings together information on vehicle condition, maintenance and fuel and energy use. It helps users understand vehicle operating trends by asking the AI questions in natural language, and reduce maintenance costs and vehicle downtime.
GM also unveiled ‘Concept Horizon,’ which outlines ways to use vehicle interiors in the autonomous-driving era. The idea is to turn the cabin into a space for work, rest and leisure once autonomous driving removes the burden of driving. An integrated user interface will enable the vehicle to provide an interior environment and services tailored to users’ preferences and circumstances.
In the long term, GM is also envisioning services in which autonomous vehicles pick up shopping or laundry and take family members to their destinations. The vehicles would handle everyday transportation tasks and park themselves, even without a driver on board. However, this is a long-term vision, and no specific commercialization timeline has been announced.
