A woman in her 30s is believed to have crossed the Civilian Control Line (CCL) near a front-line military unit in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, and approached the area near a General Outpost (GOP), damaging several sections of the fiber-optic security cables. The military detected her movements but failed to take her into custody immediately, it emerged.
According to Aju Business Daily on the 25th, the military detected the movements of an unidentified person north of the CCL in the Cheorwon area of Gangwon Province on the 24th and launched a search, but failed to take the person into custody. The following day, it was confirmed that several sections of the security cables had been cut around the GOP.
The military later took into custody, on the afternoon of the 25th, a woman in her 30s believed to be the person in question. Military authorities believe that the person detected north of the CCL the previous day, the person who damaged the cables, and the woman apprehended later were all the same individual.
The woman is said to have stayed in the area north of the CCL for one night and two days, evading the military’s search and approaching as far as the GOP. During that time, she reportedly used a cutting tool she had prepared in advance to damage several sections of the security cables.
Fiber-optic security cables are equipment installed on fences and other structures to detect intrusions or contact. With the revelation that a civilian crossed the CCL, approached the area near the GOP, and damaged security facilities, the military is likely to face criticism that the incident exposed weaknesses in its access controls and search-and-interdiction operations.
The National Intelligence Service’s joint investigation team is reportedly questioning the woman taken into custody that afternoon. The specific circumstances remain unclear, including how she entered the area north of the CCL, why she approached the GOP, and why she damaged the security cables.
