[Financial News] A woman who had reported being stalked to police was murdered a year later by the man she had identified at the time as the perpetrator.
October: stalking report → November: declined to seek punishment → December: called 112 but said, “It was a mistake”
On the 25th, Daejeon Jungbu Police Station said it had arrested and was investigating a man in his 40s, identified as A, on suspicion of murdering a former partner.
A is suspected of killing B, a woman in her 40s, at her home in Jung District, Daejeon, yesterday afternoon and fleeing.
Police launched an investigation after receiving a report from a family member who found B dead at around 2 p.m. that day, and caught A in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, at around 7:40 a.m. the following day, about 18 hours later.
It was determined that B had previously reported A for stalking her.
On October 10 last year, B reported to 112 that A was stalking her by contacting her through phone calls, text messages and other means.
Police then issued emergency measures Nos. 1 and 2, restricting A from approaching B or contacting her by phone, text message or other means, and provided B with a smartwatch she could use for one month, through November 9.
However, about 20 days later, on November 3, B visited a police station and said she had reconciled with A and did not want him punished. She returned the smartwatch early, police determined.
Police also concluded at the time that it was difficult to consider the case persistent and repeated stalking, and decided not to refer it for prosecution, citing “no suspicion.”
Then, on December 27 of the same year, police received another 112 call during an argument between A and B, but concluded the matter at the scene, finding no grounds to suspect a crime.
Police said the two told the officers who responded, “The 112 call button got pressed during a minor argument. We’re sorry,” and that, as no one had been harmed, officers only issued a warning.

However, 10 months later, B was murdered by A.
Police determined that after the crime, A removed the SIM card from his phone to evade pursuit and took a taxi to Incheon International Airport.
Police were reportedly investigating whether A had attempted to leave the country, among other matters.
However, police had imposed a travel ban, and A’s passport had expired, making it impossible for him to travel abroad.
A then fled to Gangneung, Gangwon Province, where he was arrested at a lodging establishment.
While being transported from Gangneung to Daejeon, A admitted to the crime, saying, “I was wrong.”
Police plan to investigate the details of the case, including A’s motive, and seek an arrest warrant.
