[Financial News] Additional cases of people being victimized by a man in his 30s who got a job as a convenience store part-timer and fled with cash and other items on his first day of work have been confirmed in Seoul. Following Busan and Ulsan, store owners in Seoul’s Songpa and Dongjak districts have also claimed to have been victimized by the same man.
On the 23rd, JTBC’s “Scandal Supervisor” reported that store owners claiming to have suffered additional losses had come forward in Seoul in connection with thefts at convenience stores in Busan and Ulsan.
“Scandal Supervisor” had previously covered cases in which convenience store owners said cash and valuables were stolen on the first day of work after they hired Mr. A, a man in his 30s. After watching the broadcast, B, a convenience store owner in Seoul’s Songpa District, also claimed to have been victimized by A using the same method.
B claimed that, after seeing the ID card and résumé shown on the broadcast, B recognized the man as the same person as the part-time worker B had hired. The documents matched those submitted when the worker was hired, B said.
According to B, A was hired as an overnight part-time worker on the 3rd and began his first shift. When he showed up for work, A reportedly said, “Rather than just saying I’m good at the job, I’ll show you,” and showed an eagerness to work.

However, at around 3 a.m. the following day, the 4th, B received a call from the worker on the next shift saying that A had disappeared and that the cash at the register was gone, too. CCTV footage showed A loading funds onto prepaid cards and taking cash over a period of about three minutes before leaving the store. B said the losses amounted to about 3 million won.
Two convenience stores in Seoul’s Dongjak District also claimed to have suffered losses. One owner said a newly hired part-time worker fled just an hour after starting work on the 22nd. The losses totaled about 5 million won, including 4 million won taken through a payment processing service and liquor worth about 1 million won. The ID card submitted by the worker listed the same year of birth and place of residence as A’s.
Claims of losses also emerged from a delivery company. C, the owner of the company A had listed as a former employer on his résumé, said that nearly a year had passed without C recovering about 4.2 million won of the money lent to A or paid to him in advance as wages.
According to C, A promised to repay the money while continuing to work and tried to gain C’s trust by talking about his coworkers. But A stopped responding without paying back the money and left the motorcycle he had borrowed and used abandoned in a damaged state, resulting in repair costs, C claimed.

C said that after A disappeared, he checked with the employees who had worked with A and learned that they, too, had suffered identity theft and other harm at A’s hands.
C claimed that A may have lost money through online gambling and expressed concern that there could be victims in other regions as well. C called for A to be apprehended quickly to prevent further losses.
