[Financial News] Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon said on the 25th that he “welcomes” the move, after reports that the Blue House was considering postponing taxation of virtual assets again.
Han wrote on social media (SNS) that day, “As I have continued to point out, I hear that the Blue House has decided to defer taxation of virtual assets,” adding this.
“It is fortunate that they acknowledged the inadequate preparations for taxation and belatedly put the brakes on it,” he said, adding, “It was the right thing to do, and I welcome it.”
The Blue House was reportedly leaning toward postponing once again the taxation of virtual assets scheduled for next January. This was because preparations for the tax system were inadequate and it was mindful of sentiment among young people, among whom the rate of virtual-asset investment is high. A Blue House official said the matter was “under review,” but added that “nothing has been decided.”
Han had also called for a deferral of virtual-asset taxation in 2024, when he was party leader. At the time, the Ministry of Economy and Finance announced a tax reform plan to defer taxation of virtual assets for two years, but the Democratic Party said it “could not accept” the plan. Han then repeatedly pressured the party to join the tax deferral, saying day after day, “You’re saying you’ll fight 8 million investors and young people.”
