[Financial News] A man who beat his live-in girlfriend 514 times over more than three hours, causing her death, created a fictional country and controlled her by imposing his own rules for punishment, it has emerged. The man admitted to beating her but claimed he did not intend to kill her.
On the 24th, SBS’s Unanswered Questions covered a case involving torture and murder that took place in Seoul’s Gangseo District in June this year, reporting on the relationship between the victim and the man who assaulted her, as well as the circumstances of the incident.
The incident took place on June 20. At around 2:24 p.m., a report was received that Lim Jandi, a 28-year-old office worker (a pseudonym), had lost consciousness in a semi-basement home in Seoul’s Gangseo District. The caller was her live-in boyfriend, and when emergency responders arrived, they found that Ms. Lim was already in cardiac arrest.
An autopsy found that 21 of Ms. Lim’s ribs had been broken and her major organs ruptured. A home camera inside the residence recorded her boyfriend, Jeon, who was four years younger than her, beating her 514 times over three hours and 20 minutes.
The production team also found material on Ms. Lim’s phone that shed light on the couple’s relationship. The term “Gukpeu” appeared repeatedly in conversations saved on the phone.
“Gukpeu” was short for “national project.” The couple had apparently created a fictional country called “Tturiguk” and drawn up rules and documents for running it.
Asked why they had made these rules, Jeon told the production team, “Gukpeu is a set of rules the two of us agreed on. We made them so we would fight less.”
However, the actual communication guidelines included provisions for punishing the other person. The document listed rules such as, “The moment you choose to lie, you are no longer entitled to any kind of humane treatment”; “Once punishment begins, no appeal or explanation of any kind is possible”; and “The punishment is beyond anything you can imagine.” Only Jeon had the authority to carry out the punishment.
Jeon admitted that he had beaten Ms. Lim. However, he claimed that he had not intended to kill her and that he had assaulted her impulsively because he could not tolerate her lies.
Jeon’s parents claimed that Ms. Lim had gaslighted their son. Jeon conveyed that he intended to atone by supporting the victim’s bereaved family for the rest of their lives.
An expert who appeared on the program, however, concluded that Jeon’s violence was not driven by emotional excitement. Rather, the assaults took place as he forced Ms. Lim to follow rules he had made and controlled her.
Footage filmed on the day of the incident reportedly showed Jeon speaking several times about death without raising his voice. The expert said, “He assaults the other person to a chilling extent, speaking gently and without becoming greatly emotionally agitated.”
