[Financial News] Expectations are growing that the commercialization of unmanned excavators could be accelerated. HD Hyundai XiteSolution, one of South Korea’s leading excavator companies, has been selected to lead a government-funded project to develop simulations for unmanned autonomous excavators.
HD Hyundai XiteSolution said on the 25th that it had recently been selected as the final project operator for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s government-funded project, ‘Development of a High-Precision Simulation-Based Digital Twin Platform for the Development of AI-Powered Unmanned Autonomous Excavators.’
With a total project budget of 6.33 billion won and work scheduled to run through December 2029, the project aims to create a virtual space where construction equipment can be tested. It will reproduce hydraulics, multibody dynamics, powertrains and physical responses to soil to model interactions between equipment and earth.
HD Hyundai XiteSolution will establish standard requirements for a parts database for virtual simulations and handle field validation and operational-scenario assessments, among other tasks. The company plans to incorporate field data and testing experience it has accumulated over the years.
The goal is to secure a simulation-based digital twin platform through this project. This is also expected to accelerate development of HD Hyundai XiteSolution’s futuristic excavator, ‘Future-X.’ Expectations are also growing that the design of key equipment—including excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks (ADTs)—as well as the development of AI-powered unmanned autonomous technologies and their field validation, can all be carried out in a virtual environment.
Managing Director Kwak Seong-gyu, who oversees virtual technologies at HD Hyundai XiteSolution, said, “I’m honored to take part in a key project that will lead the adoption of AI autonomy in the construction machinery industry.” He added, “Drawing on know-how proven in the field, we will actively contribute to bringing unmanned autonomous technologies into production and enhance safety and productivity at future construction sites.”
Taking the lead in the market for AI-powered unmanned autonomous construction machinery is a matter of survival for South Korean construction-equipment companies. Chinese-made construction machinery, which competes on price, commands an overwhelming share of the global market. China also has an edge in electric construction machinery, backed by its leading battery industry. Given the many variables at construction sites, companies must get ahead in the challenging field of unmanned autonomous technology to survive.
