In a commentary on the 25th, the association said, “This decision is significant because it recognizes childbirth and childcare not merely as issues individuals must handle on their own, but as realities of business management, and reflects them in policy,” and highly praised the government’s resolve to correct unreasonable systems.
On the 23rd, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups decided to introduce a special provision allowing startups whose operations are interrupted for unavoidable reasons such as military service or childbirth to receive government support for up to an additional five years beyond the existing seven-year period for recognition as a startup. This follows repeated cases in which women entrepreneurs who temporarily suspended their businesses because of childbirth and childcare were excluded from various startup support programs under the eligibility requirement that startups be less than seven years old when they resumed business activities.
The association said, “We hope this improvement will provide practical help to women entrepreneurs who have faced difficulties due to management gaps and give more women the opportunity to continue running their businesses on a stable footing,” adding, “We will actively work with the government to ensure it leads to tangible changes on the ground.”
